Last month, my family and I visited Punta Cana to celebrate my Mum’s birthday. We stayed at Melia Punta Cana Beach which was about a 20 minute drive from Punta Cana International Airport.
The Level
Seeing as it was a special birthday for my Mum, we decided to upgrade and go for the premium service—The Level. This premium offering grants guests access to exclusive facilities, personalised service and a range of additional benefits.
Arrival at the Resort
After a fun ride to the hotel with a very charismatic taxi driver, we arrived at Melia Punta Cana Beach. As we pulled up to the resort, we all agreed it was stunning.
Check-In Experience
We were then driven in a golf caddy to The Level reception where we unfortunately waited an hour to be fully checked in and taken to our rooms. For our group, we were assigned two concierges. My understanding is that this ensures no matter the time, we can access a concierge for any assistance. Perhaps neither of them were available, as they were dealing with other guests as to why it took so long, but after a long day of travels, as you might imagine, it was a little frustrating.
Once we finally got into our room, we were impressed with the space. Although not the most modern in design, it was a nice, spacious room.
Food Variety and Quality
Somewhere between 8 and 9pm, we headed to the main lobby area where most of the restaurants are for a buffet dinner at Moisaica. As I walked up to see what options were available, I was a little surprised that the hot food buffet was so limited. I expected more options, however I did manage to find some items to eat and the food was enjoyable.
During our stay, although the food was well-seasoned and full of flavour, I did find the variety a bit limited. Additionally, most of the dishes were repeated, no matter the theme. For example, on Asian night the ‘Peking Chicken’ tasted very similar to many of the other Dominican stew dishes that had been served on other occasions.
Activities and Entertainment
In terms of activities, the hotel seemed to have a range of activities for guests to enjoy. I managed to take part in Zumba once and attend karaoke night… I thought about going up to sing, but chickened out haha. We also spent most of our evenings listening to live music and watching the various shows that included Dominican and circus themes.
Overall Experience
While we had a wonderful vacation, I would attribute that more to the fact that it was a family trip—a special occasion to get together and celebrate. Ultimately, we made the most of our time there. However, considering how much we spent on our vacation, I don’t think the level of service we received was adequate. This could be because we visited in late June, which is peak season, but either way, it was a bit disappointing.
Overall, I would give my experience at Melia Punta Cana Beach hotel a 6/10.
Food flavour: 8/10
Food variety: 5/10
Hotel hygiene: 6/10
Hospitality: 6/10
Variety of activities: 7/10
