As believers, we often associate the phrase “For such a time as this” with the story of Esther. However, recently, I’ve been studying Joseph’s journey and have realized how fitting this phrase is for his life as well.
Two years passed from the day the chief butler exited prison to the day he recalled Joseph’s plea to “remember me.” Several more years had gone by since Joseph was thrown into jail for a crime he did not commit. In total, thirteen years had elapsed since his brothers sold him into slavery, and since the dreams he dreamt set him on a rollercoaster of events he likely couldn’t have imagined.
God strategically placed Joseph in a position of authority—second only to Pharaoh in the land of Egypt. During a severe famine, Joseph was in a unique position to feed nations and provide for his family, the very people who sold him into slavery. However, before reaching this pinnacle, Joseph endured years of waiting and preparation.
On the day the chief butler exited prison, he did not remember Joseph. My understanding is that it wasn’t the right time. It was in Pharaoh’s moment of desperation that God brought Joseph to remembrance. When Joseph was brought before Pharaoh, he not only interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams but also provided wise advice on handling the impending famine. With God’s favor and the skills he had honed over the years, Joseph was the only qualified person for the job.
When God gives you a dream or a vision, it doesn’t always come to pass immediately. Often, it takes time. In Joseph’s case, approximately 20 years passed from his dream of his brothers’ sheaves bowing down to him until its fulfillment. Throughout his story, despite the hardship and waiting, Joseph was being prepared.
Whether you’re in a period of waiting or trying to figure out why business is slow, keep going, keep praying, and trust that God will guide your steps. At just the right time, it will all come together, for His purpose, according to His will.
