I thought my Brita water filter was a great alternative to plastic water bottles until I found out that it filtered—just about nothing.
If you’re new here, welcome! My name is Krystal and I’m currently on a wellness journey. Over the past couple of years, I have learned so much about nutrition, toxins that we may encounter on a daily basis and sadly—the harmful contaminants lurking in our tap water.
My goal is to get to a better place holistically through increased physical activity, a diet of mostly nutritious whole foods, and a conscious effort to minimise exposure to potentially harmful products. If you’ve never used a water filter before, chances are you’ve been drinking from store bought plastic water bottles. While there was a time when plastic water bottles seemed like a great solution, in addition to its damaging contribution to plastic waste, new studies have found that plastic water bottles can be incredibly toxic for humans.
According to the National Institutes of Health, researchers discovered that, “on average, a liter of bottled water included about 240,000 tiny pieces of plastic. About 90% of these plastic fragments were nanoplastics. This total was 10 to 100 times more plastic particles than seen in earlier studies, which mostly focused on larger microplastics.”
With so many environmental toxins around us, it’s important that we find ways to minimise our toxic load. One way we can do this is by purifying our drinking water.
Prior to knowing that plastic water bottles were incredibly toxic, my main concern for wanting a water filter was to save cost on weekly water bottle purchases. With limited knowledge about the capabilities of different types of water filters, I decided to buy a 5L Brita filter. Given that my family and I consume a lot of water, I was happy to find a filter that stored a generous amount of water and the filter itself was cost effective.
About a year down the line, I came across ZeroWater. I was intrigued that with every water filter purchase they send customers a free TDS meter. I suppose this is their way of proving that their filter really does remove harmful contaminants. I was curious and so I went online and purchased my own TDS meter. I tested the water that my Brita had been filtering, and I discovered that it was barely filtering my tap water…
As you can imagine, I was extremely frustrated. I began researching, trying to find a suitable alternative but I kept hitting dead ends. Many of the filters that I came across appeared to be good, however, they did not filter fluoride—something that was very important to me.
Whilst I did consider purchasing a ZeroWater filter, I came across far too many many mixed reviews, so I decided to wait awhile and continue conducting my research before investing in another filter that I would have to again donate to charity.
During this time, I went back to purchasing plastic water bottles, which I absolutely hated. When I finally came across AquaTru— as you might have guess, I was thrilled. The reviews were good. Out of all the water filters being recommended in the health space, AquaTru seemed to pop up the most. As I carried out my due diligence, I also came across an article that mentioned that AquaTru in partnership with a local church would donate 1% of all purifiers sold to communities in need of clean, safe drinking water—communities like Flint, Michigan. I thought this was a great cause.
After a few months of prayer and deliberation, I finally went ahead and purchased my AquaTru filter!
I’ve been using my AquaTru filter for almost two months now and I love it. When I’m out and about travelling and I don’t have access to my AquaTru filter, I definitely notice the difference in water quality. I’m looking forward to the day that AquaTru launches a portable water bottle purifier so that I can filter any water, wherever I am.
If you’re looking for an at home water filter, I would definitely recommend AquaTru. There are currently four countertop filters to choose from. I have the AquaTru Carafe Waterfilter. I went for this option as the carafe is made of glass which I preferred over the plastic model. Both filters also come in an alkaline version.
